About the ECHE
The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) provides the general quality framework for the European and international cooperation activities that a Higher Education Institution may carry out under the Erasmus+ programme.
Obtaining the ECHE is a prerequisite for all Higher Education Institutions located in one of the programme countries that wish to participate in learning mobility activities for individuals and/or cooperate for innovation and good practices within the Erasmus+ programme.
Higher Education Institutions in third countries not associated to the programme are not required to hold an ECHE, as the quality framework is ensured through Inter-institutional agreements concluded between Higher Education institutions.
The Context of the ECHE
The principles of the ECHE have been adapted to align with the innovations of the Erasmus+ 2021–2027 programme, such as digitalisation, inclusion, and sustainability.
Some of the most significant additions to the new ECHE include: the commitment to reach, through inclusion strategies, groups that are underrepresented in mobility; ensuring environmentally friendly practices in the organisation of Erasmus+ activities; implementing digitalisation through the European Student Card initiative and the Erasmus+ mobile app; and the commitment to strengthen the civic engagement of mobile students.
Furthermore, Ηigher Εducation Ιnstitutions are required to comply with the provisions of the Council Recommendation on automatic mutual recognition, in order to ensure that the full automatic recognition of learning/mobility periods abroad takes place as smoothly as possible and that students do not need to take additional courses or participate in extra examinations.
